SANS WASTE: The Font That Does More With Less

CONTEXT

Everyone's trying to create new solutions to environmental challenges. But in doing so we've made a lot more junk. Paper straws. Tote bags. Wood spoons. For Earth Day, INNOCEAN wanted to do something powerful that wasn't just more junk, and wasn't asking our team members to do something on our behalf.

IDEA

Reinvent INNOCEAN's brand font, Barlow, to quietly be more eco-friendly for everyday use in print and on screens across our network.

EXECUTION

Enter Sans Waste: The font designed using a waveform essential to the INNOCEAN brand identity. Designed from the Open-Source font, Barlow, Sans Waste is a record-setting 48% effective, compared to previous eco fonts which sat at about 33% effective.

That means that Sans Waste uses 48% less ink on paper and 48% less pixels rendered on screen. And the font does that without sacrificing legibility or accessibility, thanks to ink bleed and our mind's ability to fill in the small gaps within the letterform.

Sans Waste consists of over 174 characters for use in 95 Latin-based languages and has been shared across the INNOCEAN network, being implemented in 20 countries across the globe.
